Teak is a tropical hardwood that grows in the dry forest terrains of Southeast Asia. This dense grained hardwood resists rot, warping, shrinking, and swelling, making it a perfect choice for an outdoor dining table. The glory of a teak dining table
Options for a teak dining table
Teak dining tables come in round, oval, square, rectangular and even octagonal shapes. Some tables fold, while some expand with leaves. But the thing that remains the same in teak dining tables is that the wood will almost always appear a beautiful golden honey brown color when new.
You may often find people using their teak dining tables outdoors due to the wood’s ability to withstand damage from nature’s elements for long periods of time … even decades. The high amount of natural oil content continually preserves the wood, keeping it very smooth to the touch without splintering, making it a nice option for a dining table. But, that’s not to say you most certainly couldn’t enjoy the beauty of a teak dining table indoors!Teak dining table care
Over time, if a teak dining table is exposed to the outdoor elements, it can gradually change color from a beautiful golden tan to a silver-gray patina, which is known to distinguish finely aged, outdoor teak. After a while, this patina may deteriorate to a dark-gray and greenish look if it’s not properly treated.
Note that this color transformation will not affect the durability of the teak dining table or the wood itself. However, if you wish to keep the smooth finish and golden honey color, you’ll need to sand your dining table regularly. Teak oil may also be applied to prolong the time needed between sanding.
