Wood Dining Table Types and Care

While shopping for wood furniture, you might ponder the different types you should be seeking. Different types of wood can provide different kinds of characteristics for your furniture, including color, grain and density of wood. Keep in mind that wood furniture will require special care once it is in your home.

How to care for different wood types

Wood types

Ash: A very tough and heavy hardwood that is not easily damaged. Brown ash, for instance, has a strong grain character and is commonly used for veneers or bentwood types of chairs.

Beech: A hardwood with great strength and good shock resistance. The wood grains are large and rather noticeable, while the wood pores are small and virtually invisible.
Birch: A heavy wood that has average stiffness and hardness but is above average in strength. Birch is fine-grained with an even texture, is easy to work with and is adaptable to fine types of finishes.
Cherry: A moderately hard wood, cherry wood types have strength and durability while exuding a rich color. The grain is straight and has small pores. This is often a great choice for a dining room table.

Maple: A premium wood, maple has fine grain patterns. It’s more susceptible to light and moisture damage than oak or ash types. The grain is straight and consists of some wavy patterns that are valuable for veneer wood types.
Oak: A very tough, heavy hardwood, oak is not easily damaged. Hard to work with, though, oak types are typically used for simpler designs, such as a kitchen table.
Pine: A white or pale yellow softwood, pine is easy to work with and holds a varnish well. Because it dries quickly, pine types are not usually affected by changes in humidity, but it can dent easily.
Teak: Teak wood is heavy weight and has greater strength and toughness. Teak, with a straight grain and colors that enrich with age, is often used for paneling and solid furniture, as in the case of a teak dining table. Teak wood types are also often used in an outdoor dining table.
Walnut: Beautiful for decorative furniture, walnut can be a light to chocolate brown color and has a soft and pleasing grain. Suited to carving, walnut wood types are heavy and used for paneling and solid furniture.

Care of dining tables

No Scratches: Be sure to use a tablecloth, placemats or coasters when using your dining room table. Dust with care, using a soft cloth, wet with a dusting product, because a dry cloth can scratch the surface. Also, when dusting, be sure to pick up items rather than dragging them across the table to dust under and around them. This simple care technique helps prevent many scratches on dining tables.

No Stains: Ideal care suggests using a tablemat with plastic over the seams of it underneath the tablecloth to prevent spills from seeping down into the wood on your dining table. Don’t use rubber or plastic mats, unless they are marked safe for wood, because they can stain the wood on dining tables. For proper care, keep your dining table out of excessive sunlight to prevent it from bleaching. And be sure to wipe up spills immediately to prevent stains from forming.

Protect: To protect the wood finish and care for your dining table, you may want to apply a wax or polish the table every six to twelve months. Don’t apply a wax if your table has a polyurethane finish because, in that case, the wax will cause more build-up than prevent it. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the proper care of your dining room table.

To find the best way to protect and care for your dining table, refer to its product manual, or ask the company or salesman whom you purchased it from. One of these resources should be able to give you more information about the care and protection of your dining table.
